    Intent

At Langstone Primary Academy we want the children to develop an appreciation of art and an understanding of its influence on our lives and culture. Children will learn to push their artistic boundaries by seeking inspiration from artists throughout history and will become resourceful, innovative and creative members of the school community.

With this in mind, we have developed three main aims that demonstrate the focus of our school.

    • We aim to provide enriching, hands-on experiences for the children which will inspire and motivate. They are exposed to a variety of talented artists because all art is fuelled by inspiration and children need to know that it is as varied as it is unique.
    • Children are encouraged to see the relevance of art within human culture because it has affected human beings and has changed with us and it is important to see the part that they have played within the wider world context.
    • We aim to critique, evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art because we have found that our children learn best through reflection and thinking when discussing with their peers.

In Art, this learning will mean that by the end of Key Stage 1, children will be equipped with knowledge and an understanding of:

    • Beginning to understand and experiment with different artistic processes.
    • How these artistic processes have been used or who these artistic processes have been used by throughout art history until modern day (e.g. sketching and drawing – Leonardo Da Vinci & Pablo Picasso, Painting – Fark and My Dog Sighs)

    As well as:

    • Beginning to develop core skills in drawing, printing, painting and sculpting.
    • Ensuring these skills are embedded to allow for further progression throughout Key Stage 2.

This learning will mean that by the end of Key Stage 2, children will be equipped with knowledge and an understanding of:

    • How ideas develop through an artistic process.
    • Both the artistic process and techniques of great artists and movements throughout history (Pointillism – Year 3; Pop Art – Year 4; Impressionism – Year 5; Fauvism – Year 6).

    As well as:

    • Developing a core skill set so that ideas may be communicated through: painting, sketching, print and sculpture.
    • Ensuring these skills are developed in a progressive way that builds on prior learning, deepening the children’s abilities.
